How To: Use Your Phone’s Data Connection To Get Internet Access on Your Computer

Championed by many in the Android community for his work on ClockworkMod Recovery as well as numerous apps in the market including the ever useful ROM Manager, Koushik Dutta continues to churn out useful tools for the community. This time he has presented us with ClockworkMod Tether Alpha, which like other tethering apps allows you to use your phone’s data connection to get internet access on your desktop or laptop. However, his method does not require root. In order to achieve this,  the app will need to install a virtual network adapter on your computer; so there is a PC side install. Alright, so it’s no secret that other rootless tethers exist, so what makes this option stand out? Well, aside from its prominent creator, the app functions as a proxy, and not as a NAT/masquerade solution that other tether solutions use. Dutta acknowledges carriers can still check for http user agent string, but he has already devised ideas to work around that.

At this point I’d like to extend a friendly reminder that this solution is still in an alpha state.  As Dutta writes, “The UI is pretty rough, the icons, and general app design are not final. I am just looking to make sure the underlying services all work properly.”
Downloads just past the break.
So without further ado, here are the download links.
Dutta didn’t provide any installation instructions, in fact “I am intentionally not providing any installation instructions, because I feel that if the app can’t be set up without installation instructions, I have failed to make it easy enough to use. ;) ”.
Rest assured, the process is simple as he claims. Simply run the respective setup and it should install the network adapter for you as well as automate the process of pushing his Tether apk over adb.
This version of ClockworkMod Tether will time bomb on January 7th, but Dutta expects to have an even newer version available by then. Stay tuned.
