LG quietly announced Budget-Friendly ---LG Optimus 2

While LG's high-end devices may have struggled to compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy SII last year there's no doubt its budget devices have been popular and it looks like the recently discovered Optimus 2 will continue the trend. Following on from 2011's lovable if low-end Optimus One the handset offers some minimal improvements on the hardware front in a slightly tweaked form factor. The handset maker has yet to make an announcement but the phone has been spotted in all its glory on the company's website

Key features include an 800MHz processor, 3.2" display and a 179MB rear-facing camera. The internal memory may be low but it has a 2GB microSD card in the box. On the rear there's a 3.2mp camera and powering it all is a 1500mAh battery which is expected to last for five hours of talk time. Rounding out the specs is what looks to be a vanilla build of Android 2.3.

Apart from the processor which gets a 200MHz boost from 600MHz there's little difference between the handset and last year's model. The specs are still low, even for the low-end, but the slightly faster processor should help it maintain an edge over the other budget devices out there. However it's also going to come with Swype pre-installed making text input easier on the small screen and supports Bluetooth 3.0 where the original didn't.
Externally the phone looks less like a bar of soap than the original with an appearance which is closer to Samsung's also affordable Galaxy Ace which it was announced this week is getting an update as well.
There's no indication of when or where the phone will be released or how much it will cost, though there's little doubt it's going to be as affordable as its predecessor which is currently available for around $180 unlocked. With CES just around the corner its likely more details will come to light before long.
