Google’s X Labs, according to reports, have been working on a pair of Android-powered ‘smartglasses’ that’ll feature, among other things, some form of never-before-seen transparent display technology.
According to 9to5 Google, Google has been working on some Android powered smart glasses that would feature a heads up display for relaying information from the cloud.
‘Google,’ says Android and Me, ‘has filed a request with the FCC signalling they are ready to test an “entertainment device” that will eventually be available to the masses.’
‘Google is developing an entertainment device that requires testing outside the laboratory environment. The device is in the prototyping phase and will be modified prior to final compliance testing,’ reads the FCC report.
But while Android and Me alleges that this “entertainment device” is indeed Google’s smartglasses, the FCC report does not specify whether this is actually the case or not. Either way it’s certainly an interesting prospect, if true – it reminds us of something out of a sci-fi film.
The FFC report also reveals that the device will feature Wi-Fi and GPS, as well as Bluetooth and, presumably, Google’s Android operating system. The report also says that the device will connect with other electronic devices like smartphones, TVs and tablets.
Current rumours suggest the smartglasses will interact with Android-powered smartphones also. But will also function perfectly well on their own.
So what’s the likelihood of this mysterious ‘entertainment device’ being Google’s smartglasses? Well, according to Android and Me, it’s pretty high. You see Richard DuVaul PhD - whose work centred on wearable heads up displays - has been employed at Google for just over six months now, according to reports.
Google is now testing 252 of these entertainment devices with a few to eventually releasing them in the public domain. There’s no word on when, what they are, or how much they’ll cost. But you can bet your underpants that they’ll be exceptionally cool.
