Samsung has announced plans to buy Spotify rival Mspot in a bid to bring a bespoke cloud-based media streaming service to its Android smartphones.
According to a South Korean newspaper, Samsung has paid $8.76m for the company, which launched in 2004 as one of the first cloud-based media services. Mspot is available as a standalone smartphone application that enables users to access movies and music stored in the cloud and stream customised radio stations, much-like Spotify.
The service will no doubt bring a nice boost to Samsung's recently announce S Cloud service, with deals already in place with media companies like Disney, Paramount, Lion's Gate and Sony.
"MSpot shares our vision to bring a best-in-class cloud and streaming entertainment experience to consumers and they've backed it up with great technical solutions," Samsung media solution center SVP TJ Kang said in a statement.
Mspot CEO Daren Tsui added, "Samsung is unparalleled in terms of global reach and cutting edge devices. Our combined resources, we are looking forward to redefining media consumption across the mobile universe with cloud services."
Details as to when Samsung will launch its rival to Apple's Itunes media service are still to be announced, and Samsung was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
